Bicycle Friendly BusinessUniversity of Minnesota, Twin Cities | Silver Level
Business Highlights: University of Minnesota has made significant investments in innovative technology and infrastructure to ensure a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to transportation on campus. With a strong network of bike paths, educational programs and well-dispersed informational print outs, bicycles are an essential element of campus life. The new University Bike Center supports bike commuters with convenient card-access bike lockers, repair stations with tools and professional mechanics, and an electronic trip planning kiosk. The in-house bicycle shop, the Bike Co-Op, offers bicycle education courses for all levels, as well as monthly maintenance and safe riding classes. This space is also available for repair and commuter clinics, outreach activities such as brown-bag luncheon discussions and gathering space for bicycle-related groups and clubs. During bike to work month, three stations around campus set up breakfast bars, quick check inspections by certified mechanics from local bicycle shops, and important metro and state-wide bicycling information. The University of Minnesota operates a "Helmets & Headlights" campaign where they offer discounts on helmets and lights. The campus transit network has incorporated bicyclists so well that there is always a need for additional bike parking for the 7000 and growing bikes. Most Significant Recent Accomplishment: The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities is partnering with the City of Minneapolis to bring the Nice Ride bicycle sharing system to Minneapolis. The University of Minnesota campus will be host to a number of bike share kiosks that will be installed in the first phase and grand opening of Nice Ride. |
