Business Highlights: The campus arranges social rides and maintenance clinics and offers software to help pair commuters. They have two bike fleets available to employees: one 25 bike fleet is designated for departments and the second 80 bike fleet is available to all faculty staff and students. The University of Kentucky offers bike commuters a shower, bike repair station, maintenance supplies and a designated bike maintenance person. They meet regularly with Lexington Fayette Urban County Government engineers and planners to improve the bicycling facilities on and around campus, offering financial and technical support for bicycle facility improvements. They are committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and support to facilitate bicycling on campus. In 2009, they began a bicycle registration program that is a part of student orientation and includes an educational component. They believe that embracing bicycling on campus will continually improve health, productivity, maintenance costs, air quality, and can change perspectives on transportation. Most Compelling Bicycle Related Statistic: University of Kentucky recently added bike lanes to 4 major campus streets. They are preparing a 5 year plan to replace all sub-standard bicycle parking. They have committed $45,000 in matching funding to build a covered bike parking facilities with 200 spaces. Most Compelling Bicycle Related Accomplishment:
University of Kentucky commissioned a professional study of campus bike facilities and use patterns to increase transportation-related bicycle use on campus. This study produced goals and recommendations that are now being implemented. They have also conducted numerous counts to track bicycle usage to, from and on their property for the purpose of enhancing and improving facilities and services. |
