Bicycle Friendly BusinessThe Hub of Detroit | Gold Level
Business Highlights: It makes sense that 100 percent of The Hub of Detroit employees commute by work 100 percent of the time. With free access to tools, a workstand, their lock-share and light-share program, bike reimbursements, and an emergency call-system for quick-response if encountering a mechanical issue in a remote area, they make it easy. The organization also hosts maintenance clinics with dedicated staff and supplies, social rides, and community bike month events. They offer maintenance classes in 8-week rolling sessions throughout the year, provide Youth Earn-a-Bike sessions throughout the summer, and safety trainings at schools. Their Mechanics-in-Training apprenticeship program runs for 10 weeks during the summer and provides youth an opportunity to develop valuable mechanical skills as well as job-training in an encouraging environment. In addition to these personal investments, The Hub also partners with local urban agriculture and recycling groups to provide them with human power integration in order to reduce their carbon footprint and become more sustainable in capacities such as recycling/compost pickup via bicycle and trailer, as well as produce and garden product delivery via cargo bicycle or trailer.
