Bicycle Friendly Business

Seattle Children's Hospital | Gold Level

Business Highlights: Seattle Children's Hospital recently launched a bike program to encourage biking in the workplace. They gave away 100 bikes outfitted with fenders, a rack, a lock and helmet in six weeks to emloyees that pledged to ride to work a minimum of 4 days a week year round. Not only does Seattle Children's promote biking within the workplace but they are also a major contributor to their larger bicycling community - pledging two million dollars in walking and biking infrastructure improvements to Northeast Seattle. The business provides a guaranteed ride home program, commuter challenge, bike share program, locker rooms, showers, towel service, bike safety education, maintenance classes and secure bike parking to all employees.

Most Compelling Statistic: Seattle Children's Hospital has a full-time bicycle program employee who works with three other full-time employees on commute-trip reduction programs.

Upcoming Plans: The hospital plans to work with the city of Seattle to increase the number of bicycle boulevards in the Northeast neighborhoods. Also in the works is an expansion of locker capacity and bike parking to accommodate the growing demand.
