Business Highlights: REI encourages its employees to bike to work by offering showers, lockers and secure parking. They also offer employees one full basic tune-up a year along with continual access to the use of a full-service bike shop, tools, and stands. There are organized employee rides that are posted on the company’s intranet along with information on safe riding, proper riding equipment, routes to work and a calendar of local bike events. The College Park store participates in a commuter challenge with other REI locations to motivate and further incentivize employees to bike to work. REI encourages biking not only for their employees but for the College Park community as well. The store works with the University of Maryland College Park bike club, as well as supporting DC area trail and bike lane expansions. REI dedicates volunteer and payroll time to support cycling in the College Park community, providing free classes on bike maintenance and working with local organizations to increase cycling awareness. They host special maintenance clinics for the month of May and provide a bike tech and support at 2 local stops - University of Maryland College Park and Bethesda, while also providing breakfast and prizes for commuters on Bike to Work Day.
