Bicycle Friendly Business

National Interagency Fire Center | Bronze Level

Business Highlights: Employee health and safety is a priority at NIFC. Most employees at NIFC are involved in firefighting and emergency response. Having employees that are physically active, such as from bike riding, increases their chances of being able to thrive in these instances. The National Interagency Fire Center provides a covered, secure Dero bike parking shelter, with plans to construct an additional bike parking shelter. The maintenance shop has been collecting unused materials from recent projects to use in the construction of additional bike structures. NIFC supports Bike To Work Day by organizing a commuter challenge with prizes. The agency makes biking to work safer and more convenient by providing maintenance clinics. They also provide a locker room, shower, maintenance tools and complimentary gym membership. NIFC contributes to bicycling in the community by making suggestions for bicycle-related improvements to the city and county transportation departments. The NIFC Bike Committee sends email updates on community bike events and hands out pamphlets as they become available from community bike organizations. They are currently creating a database of various bike routes that employees will be able to share and upload on an intranet site.

Most Compelling Bike Related Contribution: The agency encourages employees to bike by allocating up to 60 minutes per day of paid time for physical fitness, which includes bike riding. During construction to the car parking lot, employees that rode their bikes to work were given compensatory time incentives.
