Bicycle Friendly Business

MIT Lincoln Lab| Gold Level

Business Highlights: MIT Lincoln Lab provides all those extra special amenities- guaranteed ride home, reimbursement program, bike club, bike to week events, representation on employee committees, wiki and web information, special ride event sponsorship, bike tool kit -- that shows that its commitment is more than just the essentials. Each year the Lab and the bike club review ways to improve conditions for bike commuting. The Lab encourages employees to ride to work by offering the commuter tax benefit and flex time. . They pair new riders with experienced commuters for the event. They started a pilot bike share program in 2010, are continuing to expand the number of bikes available. The office contains a locker room, shower, and covered, secure bike parking and is located within direct access of a trail. Lincoln Lab has a website and message board which display all bike-related information including maps with bike routes, a calendar of bike-related events and path conditions. Lincoln Lab's effective support of bike commuting infrastructure in the area, and employee bike amenities at the work place have been important reasons why the Lab consistently has the best participation rate in the annual state bike to work week event.

Most Compelling Bike Related Statistic: MIT-Lincoln Lab has formally participated in the Massachusetts' "Bay State Bike Week Mass Commuter Challenge" bike to work week event since 2008. Lincoln Lab won 1st place awards and had the best participation rate for companies in its class the past 3 years.

Most Compelling Bike Related Accomplishment: MIT Lincoln Lab helped fund a comprehensive traffic study on a nearby busy and previously dangerous road. The study enabled the town to move forward on the request to restripe the road and add bike lanes. Currently, Lab Bike Committe members are actively working with the local planning board and bike advocacy groups to maintain or improve bike accommodation during a major redesign of the roadways in the area. In 2009, Lab Bike Committee members actively supported the local town bike advocacy groups in their successful bid to have the Minuteman Bikeway in Lexington plowed.
