Bicycle Friendly Business

Java Shack | Bronze Level

Business Highlights: During the past 15 years Java Shack has been a true partner in the cycling community by sponsoring two cycling teams (Suadra Coppi and Lanterne Rouge) and various bicycle related events. Located within a quarter mile of the Custis Trail and on a bike lane street, the shop is easily accessible by bike. They have worked with the Clarendon Cup organizers over the last 12 years, serving as a sponsor of the event in 2010. They also have four organized group/team rides and several informal rides that leave and return to the coffee shop every week. The shop keeps bike maintenance supplies accessible and hosts maintenance clinics. They also provide commuters with breakfast and offer prizes on Bike To Work Day. The shop works with Arlington County elected officials to advocate for better bicycle routes and improve the lanes for cycling. They have requested additional bicycle racks from the county. The coffee shop posts bicycling information, flyers and brochures on the community bulletin board including information for Arlington County's "Safe Cycling" programs. Java Shack has a large outdoor seating area that they have invested a lot of money in, and use as a means to attract cyclists in the area to the shop.

Most Compelling Bike Related Contribution: During the hiring process applicants are asked about commuting to work, giving bonuses to those applicants that bike to work. More than 50% of Java Shack employees bike commute and appreciate the bike-friendly environment.
