Bicycle Friendly Business

California State University, Long Beach | Gold Level

Business Highlights: CSULB employees who bicycle to the campus arrive energized, are highly productive, and show a low rate of absenteeism. The health and well being of staff is the university’s most important asset as a work team. In the words of the university, “When employees make healthy choices for themselves by cycling to work, it positively affects all of us.”  The University offers a Guaranteed Ride Home program, a bike repair station, employee bike club, organized rides, showers and lockers to commuters, and free monthly bike education classes taught by LCIs from the local advocacy group Long Beach Cyclists. JAX Bicycles comes onto campus each month to provide free bike safety checks and tune-up services. All CSULB faculty, staff and student workers who bike to work earn $1/day reward points for cycling, which they can cash in for a variety of gift cards, including $25 cards for JAX Bicycle Shop.  CSULB recently received funding through a collaborative proposal with the City of Long Beach for the company fleet / public bike share for 60 pubic bikes to be located on the University campus adjacent to the public transit stops. The system is scheduled to be complete by August 2011.

Most Significant Bike Related Accomplishment: CSULB surveys employee transportation choices annually. In 2010, 410 workers, nearly 12 percent of employees, used a bicycle to get to work. The goal is to increase the number of bicycle commuters .5 percent annually.
