Business Highlights: A large portion of the city’s top management commutes by bicycle and encourages their staff to do the same. A majority of department and assistant department heads bike to work. City buildings are conveniently located along a low traffic street and near bike lanes that provide north-south and east-west connectivity. These building offer employees access to shower and locker room facilities and maintenance supplies for bike repairs. The city operates a small fleet of bikes available and accessible to city employees during the day. During Bike to Work Month, the city participates in a commuter challenge with breakfast and prizes. The first-time bike commuter that rode the farthest was featured in the employee newsletter and all bike commuters were greeted by the Mayor. The city also provided extensive staff resources to help organize the logistics for the inaugural Tour de Champaign, where 400 amateur and pro-racers participated and 3000 spectators attended. |
