Bicycle Friendly Business

Chatham University | Bronze Level

Business Highlights: Bicycling is encouraged as part of the Chatham University employee wellness plan. It is one of the possible activities for the "First and 10" physical fitness program where participating employees record their physical activity for ten weeks, attempting to increase activity gradually.  To encourage faculty, staff, and students to ride there is a full time paid bike coordinator for the campus. The institution also hosts annual safe riding and maintenance classes, offers a mentorship program, and provides the Commuter Tax Benefit for Bicyclists. Chatham provides a space for a teaching and repair shop that is staffed by a 10-hour/week, trained work study student. A variety of educational and promotional events to help more students, faculty and staff ride bikes to work are offered through the shop.   Alternative transportation, including bicycling, is part of a campus-wide Climate Action Plan. The Office of Sustainability has a  goal to have 10 percent of employees biking to work.
