Bicycle Friendly Business

Alaska Native Health Consortium | Gold Level

Business Highlights: ANTHC offers morning coffee and treats to bicycle commuters once per month May-September and on Winter Solstice, which is practically an Alaska state holiday. BTWD is celebrated with morning coffee, treats, prizes, a live two-hour radio broadcast, and a blessing of the bikes. In the evening, riders from the entire community congregate for a pizza and live blue grass music party. During BTW week there is a bike safety talk and free bike tune ups. Bike safety and maintenance classes are held four times a year with additional information disseminated via email on a bi-weekly basis. This past year, the staff carpenters built a bicycle barn/corral to hold excess bikes that would not fit in secured area for BTWD. The city of Anchorage also now uses it during large events for bike valet parking.

Most Compelling Statistic: For two years in a row, 2008 and 2009, ANTHC has had the most participants for BTWD for the entire state of Alaska. They also hosted the entire Anchorage bicycling community for a free safety lecture, bike tune-up day, morning coffee and treats, two hour live radio blitz, prizes, and a live blue-grass band pizza party.
