League Raises Dues for First Time in Ten YearsSmall Increase will help fund new and popular League Programsby Andy Clarke, League Executive Director Our membership dues have increased recently and I'd be happy to explain why. The League of American Bicyclists’ programs are in the best shape they have been in for years. Our BikeEd program has more certified instructors than ever, those instructors have a host of new materials to use, and they are reaching thousands more cyclists and motorists every year; the National Bike Summit has evolved into a critical event on the cycling calendar; the Bicycle Friendly Community program is inspiring communities across the country to improve conditions for bicyclists; and clubs are joining the League at record rates because of improved programming. We haven't increased our membership dues for almost 10 years, during which time we've expanded the programs I just mentioned and we've even increased member services with benefits such as your subscription to Bicycling magazine. We continue to operate efficiently with a small staff - but in ten years the cost of doing business has increased! We want to do even more and serve you even better. Therefore, the board recently approved an annual dues increase of $5 for the regular member rate; $10 for clubs and advocacy organizations; and $10 for silver spoke memberships which come with the benefit of bicycle roadside assistance. The dues increase went into effect this month [October]. We know membership increases are never something to look forward to, and at the same time, we believe the League clearly provides a positive return on your investment. With your support, we will continue strongly protecting your rights as a cyclist and promoting bicycling for fun, fitness, and transportation. |
