Smart Cycling: Promoting Safety, Fun, Fitness and the Environment

New Book Teaches Skills Every New and Returning Rider Needs

The League of American Bicyclists’ new book Smart Cycling: Promoting Safety, Fun, Fitness, and the Environment is the perfect read for new and returning cyclists. Smart Cycling, edited by League president Andy Clarke and published by Human Kinetics, covers what all bicyclists need for riding for fun, fitness and transportation. The book overviews: how to choose the right bike and gear, essential basic cycling skills, the rules of the road, maintenance and quick repairs, safety strategies, commuting and group riding. Smart Cycling is a great resource for parents, teachers, students and new and returning riders.

“People are looking to cycling as the solution to concerns about rising fuel costs, environmental issues, and a lack of exercise,” said Clarke. “First though, we have to teach children how to ride safely and refresh returning riders with the skills to ride in traffic.” Smart Cycling is the resource new riders need to learn these skills and returning riders need to reinforce past lessons. Additionally, Smart Cycling includes the Enjoy Your Ride DVD. The set is complete with four videos to help readers better visualize the skills being taught: Essential Bicycling Skills, Bicycle Safety Tips for Adults, The Cyclist’s Eye View – uses video from a bike-mounted camera, and Kid’s Eye View – included in both English and Spanish.

If your school or organization would like to offer bicycle skill and safety classes in your community, or if you would like to refresh yourself with the basics, Smart Cycling is the ideal companion curriculum.

The Smart Cycling launch is accompanied by a national book tour led by Clarke. Clarke will be available for interviews and book signings in the following areas (check www.bikeleague.org for updates as more cities and dates are added):
