Step it Up! Join Team Bike League
Please join the Bike League in the Step It Up Challenge. It’s a two-week-long walking challenge, from October 13–26, to encourage Americans to increase their daily steps and jump start healthy habits. The goal is also to celebrate U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy’s Call to Action to Promote Walking and Walkable Communities. You can join the Bike League team, start your own team or join as an individual at StepItUpUSA.org.
The Call to Action recognizes the importance of physical activity and not only calls on all Americans to be more active, but it also calls on the nation to better support walking and walkability, including improving access to safe and convenient places to walk and for people in wheelchairs to roll. Today one out of every two U.S. adults is living with a chronic disease, such as heart disease, cancer or diabetes. Increasing walking, biking and other physical activity will significantly reduce the risk of these diseases and related risk factors.
As the League and the Alliance for Biking and Walking join together, the League is creating the Active Transportation Leadership Institute to work with state and local biking and walking advocacy organizations to strengthen our organizations and provide professional development for staff. Promoting walking and working with the Surgeon General and health and physical activity advocates is an important step to building Bicycle Friendly and walking-friendly communities.
