Recruiting & Grooming Strong Candidates

A major lesson learned from this year’s election was that picking the right candidate matters. Republicans had had the chance to win a majority in the both 2010 and 2012 but they didn’t always run the strongest candidates, or their campaigns made missteps along the way.

This year, pundits agree the Republicans learned their lesson –- they chose strong candidates, and chose the right candidate for their constituencies. That’s an important lesson we can learn from as well.

At the 2015 National Bike Summit, the premier bike advocacy event of the year, we’ll be hosting a workshop on how to do that. Kara Hollingsworth, principal of political leadership at Wellstone Action, will discuss the components, process and best practices for developing an effective candidate recruitment and leadership pipeline program for your local organization.

The session will cover how to connect leadership development and electoral work to community organizing and advocacy to build long term political power in your community, by:

  • Targeting races and identifying opportunities
  • Identifying strong potential candidates
  • Making an effective recruitment ask
  • Assessing your organizational capacity for candidate development and support

We’re excited to have Hollingsworth at the event, and hope you can join us, too! Register today.
