Use the following suggested steps to make the most out of your participation in the Bicycle Friendly Community program. New and returning applicants can find detailed information on how to apply below.

New Applicant: Residents/Advocates

  1. Take the BFC Quick Assessment
  2. Review the FAQ page and its resources
  3. Review the BFC application
  4. Seek the approval of the local government
  5. Create an application taskforce
  6. Create an account
  7. Gather required data, seek to form partnerships with local officials, schools, the police, health groups and businesses
  8. Request a Word version of the application, if needed for a collaborative effort
  9. Check if anything listed in the application could be implemented before the application is submitted
  10. Reach out to local businesses and institutions of higher education (if applicable) to apply to the Bicycle Friendly Business and Bicycle Friendly University program
  11. Contact Nicole Wynands at nicole@bikeleague.org if you need assistance in filling out the application or if you have questions
  12. Ask your partners to review the final application draft for completeness
  13. Get approval of the final application from the local government
  14. Upload supplemental materials such as photos or videos of cyclists and infrastructure, policy documents, maps, etc before you submit the application
  15. Invite other community residents to become local reviewers before the deadline
  16. Submit the application on or before the deadline of February 19, 2014.
  17. If awarded, work with the local government to prepare a press release and organize an award ceremony to celebrate your achievement
  18. Share the feedback report with your local government and community partners, prioritize the recommendations and start implementing

New Applicant: Local Government

Returning Applicants

  1. Review the Communities page and FAQ to learn about any changes that might have been made to the program since your community last applied
  2. Review the current BFC application
  3. Reach out to local bicycle advocates and create an application taskforce
  4. Create an account if you last applied before the Fall 2012 cycle
  5. If you already have an account, access the application portal and click “Copy Form” next to the last application you submitted.
  6. Select the current cycle in the popup box and hit “Submit”. This will transfer the data you submitted last time into your new application.
  7. Click on “Edit” next to the new application to update your last application.
  8. Gather required data, seek to form partnerships with schools, the police, health groups and businesses
  9. Request a Word version of the application, if needed for a collaborative effort
  10. Check if anything listed in the application could be implemented before the application is submitted
  11. Reach out to local businesses and institutions of higher education (if applicable) to apply to the Bicycle Friendly Business and Bicycle Friendly University program
  12. Contact Nicole Wynands at nicole@bikeleague.org if you need assistance in filling out the application or if you have questions
  13. Ask your partners to review the final application draft for completeness

  17. If your community receives and award your community’s designation is renewed, prepare a press release and organize an award ceremony to celebrate your achievement
  18. Share the feedback report with your local bicycle advocates and partners, prioritize the recommendations and start implementing
