Getting Started

Use the following suggested steps to make the most out of your participation in the Bicycle Friendly University℠ program. New and returning applicants can find detailed information on how to apply below.

New Applicant: Staff

  1. Take the BFU℠ Quick Assessment
  2. Review the FAQ page and its resources
  3. Review the BFU℠ application
  4. Seek the approval of the college or university's leaders
  5. Create an application taskforce
  6. Create an account
  7. Gather required data, seek to form partnerships with student groups, local officials, bike shops and other businesses
  8. Request a Word version of the application, if needed for a collaborative effort
  9. Check if anything listed in the application could be implemented before the application is submitted
  10. Encourage the community leadership and businesses (if applicable) to apply to the Bicycle Friendly Community℠ and Bicycle Friendly Business℠ programs
  11. Contact Alison Dewey at alison@bikeleague.org if you need assistance in filling out the application or if you have questions
  12. Ask your partners to review the final application draft for completeness
  13. Get approval of the final application from the business leadership
  14. Upload supplemental materials such as photos or videos before you submit the application
  15. Submit the application on or before the deadline of August 6, 2014.
  16. Invite other employees, students and other community leaders to become local reviewers
  17. If awarded, work with the institution to prepare a press release and organize an award ceremony to celebrate your achievement
  18. Share the feedback report with your local government and community/business partners, prioritize the recommendations and start implementing

New Applicant: Students and Advocates

Returning Applicants

  1. Review the University and FAQ pages to learn about any changes that might have been made to the program since your institution  last applied
  2. Review the BFU℠ application
  3. Reach out to other employees and create an application taskforce
  4. Create an account if you last applied before the Fall 2012 cycle
  5. If you already have an account, access the application portal and click “Copy Form” next to the last application you submitted. Select the current cycle in the popup box and hit “Submit”. This will transfer the data you submitted last time into your new application. Click on “Edit” next to the new application to update your last application.
  6. Gather required data, seek to form partnerships with community and other business leaders
  7. Request a Word version of the application, if needed for a collaborative effort
  8. Check if anything listed in the application could be implemented before the application is submitted
