Gail Copus Spann, League Board Vice Chair

Gail Spann presents Educator of the Year Award

As I sit here in my third, and last, term I realize how much time and effort it has taken to serve as a board member for the League.  I think it was a perfect time in my life to step up and take on responsibilities as I was winding down my racing, both on- and off-road. I had also retired as Chair of BikeTexas’s Board of Directors and wanted to get into the National movement. It’s a decision I have never regretted.

For the past few months I have been Vice Chair of the Board and, under the leadership of Karen Jenkins, our Chair, it has been a very productive time for the whole board. My passion for cycling and for the League’s long history has kept me energized and grateful for the amazing work we do. I have a strong focus on education and for our Smart Cycling program in particular.

Helping to guide our programs and to interact with staff has been a remarkable experience. My pride in the League has never wavered, and for good reason. When I present an award to a Bicycle Friendly Community, it is such a joy to see mayors and council members truly appreciate what has been done to accomplish and earn this prestigious award.

And speaking of awards, the Gail and Jim Spann Educator of the Year Award is something to be most proud of. This will be given each year for the life of the League of American Bicyclists.

The League is calling for members to consider running for election to serve on the Board. If you are interested, please read the criteria and qualifications. If you love the League, think you have the qualification and can commit the necessary time, I encourage you to apply. Go to  https://bikeleague.org/electionprocess to see how to apply.

You can find more about the qualifications for board service in this blog post by League Board Chair Karen Jenkins.
