Fighting Inequality Through Policy

We’re excited to announce the featured speaker at the opening plenary of the 2015 National Bike Summit: Maya Rockeymoore, the President of Center for Global Policy Solutions and director of Leadership for Healthy Communities, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Rockeymoore is an expert in equity in policy, specifically in health care. As a part of her responsibilities as director of Leadership for Healthy Communities, Rockeymoore is dedicated to helping state and local elected and appointed officials advance policies that support healthy eating, active living, and childhood obesity prevention.

At the Summit, Rockeymoore will be discussing targeted universalism in policy and how that relates to transportation equity. The principal is aimed at using a universal idea, like “health care for all,” and applying that policy to all communities. This plays out by ensuring affordable, accessible health care in communities where it doesn’t already exist and ensuring people have transportation options to get there.

In a recent interview, Rockeymoore described what inspired her to pursue this career path.

“The desire to tackle inequality drove me to embrace politics, policy, and programs as primary vehicles for improving lives,” she said. “As the daughter of an Air Force officer, I traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad and witnessed how people lived around the world. I saw that there were haves and have nots everywhere and I was particularly struck by how government systems and policies made a material difference in people’s lives. As a result, I have dedicated my career to addressing health, educational, economic and civic inequalities by leveraging the tools of politics and policy to create positive social change.”
