Velo City Global 2010:
Copenhagen - You Have to be There
Different Gears, Same Destination
World’s largest Global Conference on Cycling
Imagine a large, bustling, world-class, international capital city with one of the highest standards of living of any nation on earth…that literally revolves around bicycling. Except that cycling is such a normal, everyday activity that residents don’t think of themselves as cyclists: they say riding a bike is as normal as brushing your teeth.
That city is Copenhagen, Denmark where 36 percent of all trips are made by bicycle – and their goal is to increase that number to 50 percent.
For one week in June 2010, the city is opening its doors to 1,000 planners, engineers, advocates, academics, industry leaders, educators, environmentalists and health professionals from around the globe who want to emulate Copenhagen’s success in their community, and who want to discover first hand just how it is done.
Copenhagen, together with the European Cyclists’ Federation, is hosting the first Velo City Global conference and our goal is for at least 100 participants to be there from the United States.
Why?
The official conference web site has all the details and sales pitch – Copenhagen is easy to get too, there are loads of things to do and see, there’s great recreational riding and bicycle touring nearby, and it’s also a great walking city.
Yes, but why Copenhagen and why now?
Three compelling reasons:
First, like many other great European cities with high levels of bicycling, it is inspirational to simply be in a city where cyclists are everywhere, in huge numbers! More than that, however, Copenhagen has transformed itself for cycling in ways that have direct applicability and relevance for U.S. cities. … more
Second, the design and content of the conference will be truly world-class. The flow and format of the event will maximize opportunities to learn from and interact with your peers from around the world. … more
Third, you will be part of a powerful and influential United States delegation that’s going to be in Copenhagen next June. Take a look at who is already committed to being there, and others who are recommending you attend this important event. … more
