Traveling with Your Bike on Airlines
Frontier - Frontier has removed the flat fee for checked bicycles and will now include them in the standard baggage allowance, meaning customers traveling on Classic or Classic Plus fares can include their bike as one of their two complimentary checked bags and Economy passengers would pay $20 if the bike is one of their first two checked bags. Frontier recommends to give yourself an extra 30 minutes for check-in if you are checking your bike
What is allowed: non-motorized touring or racing bicycles with single seats. Bicycles must have the handlebars fixed sideways and the pedals removed and encased in a protective, durable case or box. Pedals do not need to be removed if wrapped in plastic foam or similar material.
What is not allowed: Items which exceed 99.9 lbs or 109 linear inches will not be accepted. According to Frontier, the definition of linear inches is L+W"H. A standard hard-plastic bike box is around 85 linear inches, so must of us should be compliant with these specifics.
Southwest - Non-motorized bicycles, including Bike Friday and Co-Pilot, will be accepted in substitution of a free piece of checked baggage at no additional charge provided the bicycle is properly packaged and the box containing the bicycle fits within the 62-inch sizing limit and weighs 50 pounds or less. (Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height per checked piece of luggage.) The handlebars, kickstand, and pedals must be removed and placed inside the box. A $50.00 each-way charge applies to bicycles that don't meet the above criteria.
Jetblue - Bicycles are accepted on domestic flights for a fee of $50 per bike each way and will count as one of your checked bags.
Please note: overweight baggage fees will not be assessed for bicycles. However, the maximum allotment of 99 lbs per bag still applies.
Also note: if bicycle and container are less than 62 dimensional inches and under 50 lbs., the bike fee will not be assessed.
International Flights:
Bicycles are accepted on international flights for a fee of $80 each way per bike on a space-available basis, and will count as one of your checked bags.
Please note: overweight baggage fees will not be assessed for bicycles. However, the maximum allotment of 99 lbs per bag still applies.
Also note: if bicycle and container are less than 62 dimensional inches and under 50 lbs., the bike fee will not be assessed.
Bicycles are accepted to all destinations EXCEPT to/from the Dominican Republic.
Delta - Non-motorized touring or racing bicycles with single seats are accepted as checked baggage on most flights with the exception of some Delta Connection® carriers and aircraft that may not accept bicycles as checked baggage, and may have different limits due to cargo constraints.
For travel within or between the United States (including U.S. Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico) and Canada - 200 USD/CAD*
For travel between the United States (including U.S. Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico) or Canada and all international markets - 200 USD/CAD/EUR*
For travel between all international markets - 200 USD/CAD/EUR*
For travel to/from Brazil - 75 USD/CAD/EUR*
United - Weight/size limit is limited to 50 pounds. It will cost you $100 for domestic flights and up to $200 for international. (Hard cases usually way 30 pounds)
American - Weight/size limit is limited to 70 pounds and 115 inches. It will cost you $150. You may have to pay the regular checked-bag fee ($20-$30).
If bicycle and container are less than 62 dimensional inches and under 50 lbs., the bike is charged the applicable baggage charge for the 1st checked bag.
