Smart Cycling - Traffic Skills 101

Date: REI - Oakbrook Terrace, Saturday Nov 7, 12 to 4PM and Saturday, Nov 14 10AM to 2pm

Description: Whether you are a beginning cyclist, an experienced cyclist, or are returning to cycling after years away from it, you will find something useful for you in the Smart Cycling Traffic Skills 101 course. Experience the enjoyment of bicycling for fun and exercise. Preserve the environment and save money by running errands by bike rather than by car.

The 8 hour Traffic Skills 101 course will help you refine and refresh your cycling skills; to ride your bike confidently and safely for transportation, fitness ,and recreation, in traffic and on trails.

Learn to be visible and predictable, to ride safely in traffic, to ride in groups, and to avoid crashes. It covers bicycle safety checks, fixing flats, basic maintenance , essential on-bike handling skills, traffic cycling skills, and crash avoidance techniques. A student manual is included.

There are two sessions.

A 4 hour classroom session covers

  1. Finding the Right Bike and Setting It Up to Fit,
  2. Basic Maintenance,
  3. Traffic Rules and Riding Safety in Traffic

A 4 hour on-bike session covers

  1. Essential Bike Handling Skills,
  2. Emergency Maneuvers,
  3. Supervised Traffic Cycling Practice on Local Roads

Successful completion of both sessions earns a Certificate of Completion for the League of American Bicyclists Traffic Skills 101 Course. This course is a prerequisite to several other League of American Bicyclists courses, including the League Cycling Instructor Program.

Class will be held at REI - Oakbrook Terrace 17W160 22nd St Oakbrook Terrace, IL 60181

The classroom session is on Saturday, Nov 7, 12:00PM to 4:00PM

The on-bike session is on on Saturday, Nov 14, 10:00Am to 2:00PM, (Rain date is Nov 21)

Price for the course is $60 / person.

A Family Rate of $45 / person is available to 2 or more members of the same family who attend the same course
