Smart Cycling - Traffic Skills 101Date: Friday, July 17, 2009 Description: "Traffic Skills 101" -- The League's basic course in bicycle handling, traffic safety, and hazard avoidance. (Formerly called "Road I.") Meets Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. for the classroom phase, and Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for the on-the-bike portion. Friday Night, July 17 -- About 4 hours in the classroom using discussion, demonstrations, computer presentations, and videos. This part covers the basics for skilled and enjoyable cycling, including riding in the Little Rock metropolitan area, necessary equipment, crash avoidance, and your legal rights and responsibilities. A bicycle is not required for this session, but you'll want to bring your helmet for fitting. Saturday afternoon, July 18 -- On-Road Phase: About 5 hours. This on-the-bike session provides an opportunity to apply what was learned in the classroom session. We will be learning and practicing basic bike handling and some emergency maneuvers. We will also ride in a variety of downtown traffic conditions to practice and demonstrate your knowledge and performance of vehicular cycling skills. This session includes a written multiple choice test and a riding skills evaluation on the streets of North Little Rock.
