League of American Bicyclists Volunteer Positions

Directors

Members of the League’s Board of Directors are either elected by the membership by region (including one elected at-large) or by appointment by the board. Members serve for three year terms and may serve no more than three consecutive terms.

Primary Responsibilities
• set the overall strategy and direction of the organization
• ensure sound governance of the organization
• ensure sound fiscal management of the organization
• hire and oversee the Executive Director
• assist with fundraising goals

Time Commitment
Each year, all Directors are expected to
• attend all Board meetings, which typically include two in-person meetings and four or more meetings via teleconference
• serve on at least one Board committee or task force
• attend one regional event or member meeting
• attend the annual membership meeting (March)

Directors elected by region are expected to work with staff make the following annual selections for their region:
• Regional ride for greater than usual LAB presence
• State Ambassadors (see later)
• Club of the Year

Information Provided
Directors will receive the following communications and materials to assist them in fulfilling their commitments:
• Annual financial audit report and management letter
• Monthly financial statement and reports
• Monthly Executive Directors report
• Board meeting minutes
• Board meeting packets
• Volunteer newsletter (new)
• E-news
• Magazine
• Cue Sheet
• League promotional kit (new)
• New products as they are developed

State Ambassadors

Staff, in conjunction with regional directors, will appoint one person in each State to assist the regional director in reaching out to members, volunteers and affiliated organizations to involve them in the mission of the League and its programs.

Primary Responsibilities
• provide closer liaison between the Regional Director and League members, volunteers and affiliated organizations
• identify issues, challenges, and opportunities for the League to address in relation to its member services and programs
• promote member participation in the League
• promote League membership, services and programs to people and organizations in their state
• assist their regional director in recommending regional events and award recipients for the national office
Ambassadors do not make policy for the League should only act as a spokesperson for the League after checking with relevant board and/or staff members

Time Commitment
State Ambassadors are expected to attend at least one League-sponsored event in their board region and to participate in two conference calls annually. They are also encouraged to attend at least one national League event such as the National Bike Summit, BikeEd Conference or Rally.

Procedure for appointment
Interested members should contact either the regional director in their region or the League’s membership director. State ambassadors will initially be appointed for one year terms.

Club Representative

Each affiliated club and advocacy organization shall appoint one person to maintain contacts between the national and state/local affiliated organization.

Primary Responsibilities
• keep the leadership of the affiliated group informed about League services, activities and programs
• provide feedback on the League’s club program and services
• promote League membership among the members of the local club/affiliate
• select a Volunteer of the Year for their club/affiliated organization
• recommend League affiliation to other local clubs that may not yet be members

Time Commitment
• make at least one presentation each year to the board and members of the affiliated organization to update them on League activities.
• participate in at least one club rep conference call each year

League Cycling Instructor

LCIs deliver bicycle education and skills training to enable riders of all ages and ability to ride more safely, comfortably, and enjoyably. Instructors are certified by the League through an intensive training program.

Primary Responsibilities
• Deliver at least 20 hours of bicycle education each year
• Notify the League of each class; provide participant lists (necessary for insurance)
• Promote the work of the League and League membership during classes

Time Commitment
• Deliver at least 20 hours of bicycle education each year
