Within 30 days, your governor will decide how to apply this cut to your state's transportation budget. If not fairly allocated, this could be the end of programs that fund trails, walking and biking in your state. Contact your Governor now!

8.28.07   |  Taos, N.M. Completes Placement of Bicycle Signage

Taos Share the RoadThe Town of Taos has just completed placement of bicycle signage on Town streets that are primary work routes for area commuters, in addition to many that are also routes touching the area’s activity hubs. The signs include “Bike Lane” signs as well as the even more critical “Share the Road” signs where bike lanes do not currently exist (see photo, left). The signs are only a first step – but an important first step – in an overall trails plan for the Town of Taos. The signs have been placed by the Town of Taos Public Works Department through its Streets Division.

8.11.06   |  Nashville Gets Upbeat About Bikes

Nashville is one of a growing number of mid-size U.S. cities that is reversing years of neglect for bicyclists. A recent article on Tennessean.com tells the story of the city's efforts to become more bicycle-friendly, and highlights some of the key elements every city needs. An active local advoacy group pushing the city to do more; one of the country's best bike dealers helping people to enjoy the ride, an ambitious regional bike plan and active city staff; and examples of people changing the way they behave.

8.15.06   |  Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective Focuses on BikeEd in Utah

In July, the Utah Department of Transportation won a $200,000 grant to educate people on bicycling safety, increase helmet use, and create new bicycle education programs in schools and other communities. They innovatively and immediately began using the grant to offer a League Cycling Instructor course, certifying 11 new LCIs. In July they began offering two Road I courses each week, and they plan on continuing this schedule through September. After a traffic crash that resulted in a cyclist's death, a Beaumont, Texas police officer said, "Vehicles have the right of way over cyclists." Read more here.

 

5.28.06   | California Grand Jury Recommends Bicycle Education and Enforcement

A grand jury cited lack of enforcement of laws related to cyclists and a lack of bicycle education as problems causing traffic accidents. For a truly bicycle friendly community, the League would add proper engineering, encouraging more people to ride and ongoing evaluation to that list.

The Board of the League of American Bicyclists met Friday, July 14, 2006 during the League's national rally at Cycle Across Maryland. Tops on the agenda was the election of new officers. Amanda Eichstaedt was elected President. Don Sparks was elected Vice President. Ellen Jones was elected Secretary. The next board meeting will be held on March 17, 2007. | go
